Breaker

The moments crash on by before you know what’s lost while you act like this present never ends. You’ll grasp at empty days after they pass you by, clutching at what you missed. Breathe deep. Breathe slow. Targets come, faces go in confused waves of change; the things you expect will not come to pass. Here there are only means that matter as your ends simply wash away. Precarious lives, precarious ambitions, etched out on reclaimed land. The water will flood back in.

It’s her words that fall from my mouth. It’s his words that fall from my mouth. What I claim isn’t mine alone. What I own I don’t own alone. It’s my words that fall from her mouth. It’s my words that fall from his mouth. What I build I don’t build alone. Where I stand I don’t stand alone. But I know it wasn’t their time and I know it might not be mine. Actions still half formed, discussions half finished, the door held ajar, still waiting.

Myth

Lives like chess - but without the same set of chess pieces on the board. And maybe you’re better at this than I could be but its lies to say the game wasn’t rigged; it’s a lie to pretend somehow you earned what you won alone. I wince at lost pieces. The moves I make are not moves I’d choose. My options drift away as mistakes start to sink in but its lies... You never stood alone. Self made myth, self made man.

What do I nurture? What will I tread down? I stand between what I need and what I could be. Like ashes after wildfire; new shoots push on up through fertile soil. I’m reminded there are many types of warrior when I watch you refuse an easy way out. I have a choice just to stand for myself or to take a risk on something more.

Hide behind “if you didn’t, someone would”. Tell me, what in “just trying to get on” makes that choice and your actions less than yours, turns a wrong to doing right and sets you free? I know you. We know you. We don’t forget. Defeat is being here to remind you: “Count our faces - your eyes shut tight - one by one.”
